Why Your Cold Emails Get Sent to Spam in 2026
How to Build out an Email Infrastructure Based on Email Deliverability and Sender Reputation
I was challenged two months ago to get as deep into cold emailing knowledge and communities as I could, and what I learned will forever impact how I see Gmail and my role as a marketer.
As I entered these communities to begin my study on cold emailing, I tried my best to ignore all the execs online telling me that "cold email is dead" and "flooded inboxes won't be worth our money." I thought it would be best to approach my research with 0 Biases, and before I get into how I learned these things, here are the most important things I now know about email:

How to create the most 2026-proof email infrastructure
(per my anthropological research)
I dug into Reddit pretty hard, knowing that's where I would find the most ecstatic individuals when it comes to cold emailing, and boy, their excitement is contagious. I spent a total of 70+ hours on Reddit specifically, and about 80% of that time was spent learning about ALT domains. ALT domains are a whole 'nother domain. They aren't branches off of your corporate domain; those are called Sub-domains. Creating these ALTS for different email use cases is where our 2026 infrastructure starts. It is better to be as transparent with Google Mail as possible, so if your use case is cold emailing, have a dedicated domain for it (ex. mathieusphotosmail.com). If you are sending 50-100 emails a day, it's better to be in that range every day, with no sudden spikes in send volume (which may flag your account).
Every Company should have these 2/3 Domains:
Corporate domain (Internal Communications) must have, obviously
Client Comm domain (External Client Communications)
Newsletter/Mail domain (Cold Emailing, Newsletters, Case Studies, etc)
What if I want to send more than 50-100 a day?
Get another mailbox. Get 2 more, get 3 more, get however many you want. Every new mailbox you add under that new ALT domain will be able to send the same volume as the last, meaning you can 2x, 3x, or 4x your send per day! It is also helpful to have spare mailboxes ready to use in case one of your active ones is marked as spam too often or *burned* as the redditors call it.
If I buy 2 new mailboxes, can I use them right away?
No, please don't. There is a 3-4 week process to be done before any mailbox can be used fully. Email send has to gradually warm up as the inbox ages. In an ideal world, each inbox should warm up around one month, start day one with one email, and add an email every day, until you are around 30 at the end of the month. Only then will the mailbox have the reputation you need with Google to land at the top of inboxes.
Why you should put the effort into cold email in 2026
Google is doing the best it ever has at detecting and getting rid of scammers, spammers, and spoofers. And I am assuming you are none of those. Google wants real people to email real people, and conversations to be facilitated, so in your initial outreaches, get to know them, their issues, and how you can support their business goals. Leave the selling for the Zoom chats, or the coffee chats, and use Gmail how Gmail wants to be used. The "flooded inboxes" execs are talking about are now being filtered to spam, and if Gmail finds your email behavior to fit their goals, there are no limits to the people you can talk to and the deals you can win.
